You piqued my curiosity Richard and I googled the above species. They do look very similar. We also have another woodpecker that resembles it a bit closer. The Hairy Woodpecker is a little larger than the Downy and the beak is slightly longer. Difficult to tell them apart at times. Amazing that you have the same in the UK! Beautifully detailed image, Bianca, you can see every feather! The pattern and colouring is exactly the same as that of the Greater Spotted woodpecker in the UK, though that is a fair bit bigger. Interesting that two birds separated by so many miles of water should still look so alike, common ancestor presumably. V&F for PIF in CFC.
